Periocular & Ocular Malignancy Q & A
What is periocular malignancy?
A periocular and ocular malignancy is a cancerous (malignant) growth that occurs anywhere within the orbit (the eye socket).
The most common types of periocular skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Both are slow-growing but can be dangerous if untreated. Melanoma is a rare type of periocular malignancy. It can grow rapidly and is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
You can also develop noncancerous (benign) tumors in the periocular area. While benign tumors aren’t cancerous, they may require treatment for either cosmetic or medical reasons.
When should I seek help for a periocular and ocular malignancy?
To be on the safe side and protect your eye health, it’s always best to come into Northeast Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgeons for an evaluation if you notice changes around your eye. Early detection of periocular malignancies gives you the highest chance of a cure.
How is a periocular and ocular treated?
Dr. Habib will discuss the best options for treatment if you are diagnosed with periocular malignancy.
These include surgical removal, radiation, topical or systemic chemotherapy, or immunotherapy.

- Cancer removal
Depending on the tumor type and location, Dr. Habib may surgically remove the cancer or she may recommend working together
with a Mohs surgeon to excise the tumor.
- Reconstruction
Dr. Habib skillfully reconstructs the treatment area to ensure that your eyelids and the surrounding skin still function properly and
look normal. Reconstruction techniques can vary with the amount of skin removed. If necessary, Dr. Habib can perform skin grafting
to restore your eye health, appearance, and function.
After skin cancer removal, it’s extremely important to avoid the main factor in most skin cancers: sun exposure. Dr. Habib can
recommend the best ways to protect your skin and minimize your risk of cancer recurrence.

My daughter and her dad was running late to her first appointment. I just called the office to let them know that my daughter's father was running late. I was hoping that I didn't have to reschedule the appointment. But the office was nice enough. To just push the appointment time to 2pm instead of 1pm. Thanks

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The doctor is great. Would suggest more time allocated by schedulers for doctor time etc so that the waiting time is reduced and the doctor has more breathing time.
