A few of the most common eyelid problems are:

Ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelid. There are a variety of reasons that this can happen and a thorough examination and testing can help to determine the reason. The degree of ptosis can range widely, from fairly mild drooping to severe drooping that actually obscures the pupil. Severe ptosis can interfere with your vision.
Dermatochalasis is the medical term for excess upper eyelid skin. When severe enough, it can cause your upper eyelid to droop over your eye. Although it can look the same as ptosis, dermatochalasis is different because it only refers to extra skin rather than a change in eyelid position.
Entropion is an inward-turning eyelid, usually affecting the lower eyelid. With entropion, your lashes may rub against your eye, causing discomfort and a foreign body sensation. If untreated, entropion could eventually lead to corneal abrasions, corneal scarring, corneal thinning, recurrent eye infections, and vision loss.
Ectropion is an outward-turning eyelid. Like entropion, it usually affects the lower eyelid. Ectropion can cause dry eyes, light sensitivity, tearing, burning, and chronic irritation. As with entropion, it could lead to even more serious eye damage if untreated.
Floppy eyelid syndrome occurs when the upper eyelids evert spontaneously. This often occurs during sleep and can lead to significant eye irritation. This condition may be associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
Because the symptoms of different eyelid malpositions can overlap, an in-person evaluation with Dr. Habibat Northeast Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons is the best way to distinguish the reasons for your symptoms.
