Trauma services offered in Fairfield, CT
Whether it’s a laceration, fracture, or another type of severe damage, eye trauma requires a specialized treatment approach. At Northeast Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, skilled ophthalmic surgeon Larissa Habib, MD, offers personalized solutions for periocular trauma, orbital fractures, and other serious eye issues.
A few of the most common types of periocular trauma are:
- Eyelid laceration
- Chemical burns
- Burns
- Lacerations of the tear drainage system
- Orbital fractures
What is periocular trauma?
Periocular trauma is sudden damage around the eye. Trauma may occur in the eyelid skin or extend deeper into the orbit. More
extensive trauma may affect any of the orbital structures, including the bones surrounding the eye, the eye itself, the lacrimal gland (tear gland), muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.
What are the signs that I need help for trauma?
Eye trauma is usually clear to see, with some possible issues including:
- Severe pain
- Vision loss
- Bleeding
- Foreign body sensation
- Severe swelling
- Light sensitivity
- Double vision
- Eye discharge
- Protruding eye
Periocular trauma is often urgent, and delayed care can lead to more complicated issues. It’s important that you contact Northeast Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons so Dr. Habib can diagnose and treat your condition as soon as possible.
The type of eye trauma focused on is the globe itself. For example, an orbital fracture could lead to issues such as the position of your eyeball, vision problems, or permanent lower lid drooping.
Dr. Habib takes care of periocular trauma, such as lacerations, hematomas, tear drainage system damage, and orbital fractures. She also treats long-term sequela — an after-effect of disease, condition, or injury, like scarring.
How is eye trauma treated?
Dr. Habib examines both the exterior and interior of your eye to assess the damage and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
There are many treatment approaches for eye trauma, ranging from eyewashes and eye drops to surgical repair. In the most severe cases of eye trauma, you could potentially need eye removal surgery. Fast action is the best way to prevent severe complications and preserve your vision.

My daughter and her dad was running late to her first appointment. I just called the office to let them know that my daughter's father was running late. I was hoping that I didn't have to reschedule the appointment. But the office was nice enough. To just push the appointment time to 2pm instead of 1pm. Thanks

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The doctor is great. Would suggest more time allocated by schedulers for doctor time etc so that the waiting time is reduced and the doctor has more breathing time.
